Gluten Free Friday: Are Rice Krispies Gluten Free?

Are Rice Krispies gluten free??  I certainly thought so when looking at the back of the box.  I’ve learned to quickly look at the box to the bolded section where they usually list if the product’s ingredients include milk, wheat, soy, or eggs.  I did not see wheat listed, so I thought it was good to go!  I mean, it’s only puffed rice, right??

WRONG!  I happened to see “Gluten Free” Rice Krispies right there in the regular cereal aisle next to the regular Rice Krispies when I was at the grocery store.  Before buying anything, I decided to go home and do my research.  Apparently regular Rice Krispies are NOT gluten free.  Rice Krispies typically include barley malt as one of their ingredients for flavoring.  Apparently any malts, made of wheat, rye, or barley, contain gluten.
The Gluten Free Rice Krispies are made with whole-grain brown rice and do not have any barley malt in them.  Apparently they are supposed to be less-sweet than the regular Rice Krispies because of the barley malt being eliminated, but I feel like all Rice Krispies are pretty plain, so I didn’t notice a difference.  And, what’s great is that they were the same exact price as the regular kind!
I used the Gluten Free Rice Krispies in my recent batches of Valentine’s Day Rice Krispie Treats and they tasted exactly the same as they way my regular Rice Krispie treats taste.  Now that is exciting!!!!!
