How to Make a Balsamic Glaze

A few years ago, my sister and I used to go to T.G.I. Friday’s religiously to order one of their appetizers: quesadillas drizzled with a balsamic glaze.  We would have a day of shopping at the King of Prussia Mall and then stop at the restaurant right there before going home.

We didn’t go there for the quesadillas – we went for the incredible balsamic glaze that was on top of it!  It gave the food such a unique and distinct flavor that we fell in love with!  Unfortunately, that specific item is no longer on the menu there.  So when I found myself reminiscing and craving this balsamic glaze recently, I knew I had to take matters into my own hands and see if I could replicate it myself!
Here’s what I did to create my own balsamic glaze.  It does take about 35 to 40 minutes for the balsamic vinegar to reduce, so if you are making a large meal, you will definitely want to get this on the stove right away before you get started on everything else.
Ingredients:
  • 1 cup balsamic vinegar
  • 2 tablespoons of brown sugar
Directions:
  • Pour your balsamic vinegar into a small pan or pot on the stove.
  • Add in the brown sugar.
  • Turn your stove up to high and bring to a boil.  Once it comes to a boil, turn the heat down to low.  Simmer on low for about 35 minutes, stirring occasionally.
  • You will notice the mixture become a thicker, syrupy texture.
While the balsamic vinegar was turning into a balsamic reduction, I cooked some plain chicken breasts. I then took a spoon to drizzle my newly made balsamic glaze over the chicken. PERFECTION!  Adding a balsamic glaze is a great way to take plain, boring chicken and fancy it up!  And it tastes great!
