Cooking Inspiration: Julia Child

“This is my invariable advice to people: learn how to cook – try new recipes, learn from your mistakes, be fearless, and above all have fun!”  — Quote from Julia Child from her book My Life in France.

Wow!  What incredible advice!  I think that’s exactly what I’m doing right now.  I have definitely been trying new recipes….whether borrowing new ones from friends, finding them through online searches or cookbooks, or trying new things on my own.

I’ve certainly made my mistakes along the way, but I’m learning from them.  I’ve learned that it is really important to read a recipe through entirely before you begin.  And each time I make a recipe more than once, I usually end up tweaking the ingredients a bit (I think my beef stew is now perfect with the amount of pepper I’ve decided to add).

I’m having lots of fun, not only making and eating delicious meals and desserts, but also by blogging!  I love sharing my experiences and I’ve already started to hear from people that are trying out my recipes!  What is most fun is seeing my blog views climb higher day after day.  The Food Marriage Blog views are now over 2000, which is amazing to see because it is still so young at just 4 weeks old!!!!

The one thing I probably need to work on is being fearless.  I am definitely fearless in terms of not being afraid of making a mess in the kitchen.  Every time my husband walks in during or after I’ve finished cooking, it looks like a bomb exploded.  When I stir ingredients on the stove, they spill out of the pot; when I add flour into my mixer, it puffs all over counter; when I try to take cakes out of their pans, they sometimes crumble and fall apart onto the floor!  But I don’t think that is the kind of fearless Julia is talking about…

I guess I do still have a fear of long, complicated recipes.  I also have a fear of cooking things I’ve never made before, especially if it’s a dish I’m bringing to a party and people are expecting it to be good!

I also have to admit, I am a little intimidated by Julia Child’s own cookbook, Mastering the Art of French Cooking.  My mom bought me the cookbook for Christmas a couple years ago, the year the movie Julie & Julia came out on DVD.  She gave me both the cookbook and the DVD together.  I watched the movie right away and it was so cute!  I flipped through the cookbook right away, especially to find the Boeuf Bourguignon, which was highlighted in the movie.  However, the large book with no pictures and a lot of French words still continues to scare me.  I have not made ONE recipe from it yet, but again, like the The Newlyweds’ Cookbook, it makes for great kitchen decor!

One of my goals over the next year will be to become more fearless in the kitchen!!!

Thanks for your inspiration Julia!
