Increasing Food Blog Traffic & My First Featured Post on Photograzing!

Since I’m new to the food blogging world, I’ve been doing some research on how to increase my blog traffic and get noticed in the food blogging world.  The first thing I did was join the food blog community, FoodBuzz and through that, I got my first real reader outside of my friends and family – FlourTrader!  Her blog is great, too!  Through FoodBuzz, you can link your blog up and your posts will automatically post to the community.

I also recently found an informative article from another blogger, Better with Butter, that discussed Increasing Traffic To your Food Blog in Five Simple Steps.  The article that they wrote was from 2009, but seemed to still have a lot of relevance and highlighted a few websites that are great for showcasing your blog and really driving traffic!

The article basically taught me that if you want to get noticed in the food blogging world, you want to get your work posted on one of these three sites:

  1. Foodgawker
  2. Tastespotting
  3. Photograzing

However, the only downside to it is that you can’t just submit anything and share your posts freely.  You have to submit a good-quality picture and it has to be accepted by their editors.  And from the reviews I’ve read, they don’t accept a lot.  I tried submitting a few of my pictures from some of my recent blog posts and started to think that it was going to be a waste of my time.

My Turkey, Ham & Cheese Pinwheels
picture that I kept submitting…

The first few I submitted, I got the following responses.

  • Foodgawker rejection of my Baked Cinnamon French Toast Sticks – “Declined – photo/food composition.”
  • Foodgawker rejection of my Turkey, Ham & Cheese Pinwheels – “Declined – Composition – too tight.”   (What does that even mean!?)
  • Tastespotting rejection of my Baked Cinnamon French Toast Sticks – “Declined – lighting, composition.”
  • Tastespotting rejection of my Turkey, Ham & Cheese Pinwheels – “Declined – composition.”

Sticks

I know I’m not a professional photographer, but I thought my pictures were somewhat decent!  And then just today…I found out that my Turkey, Ham & Cheese Pinwheels were featured on Photograzing!!!  Guess it wasn’t a waste of time after all!

You can find my featured post here on the Photograzing website: http://photograzing.seriouseats.com/2011/11/turkey-ham-cheese-pinwheels.html

So excited!!

xoxo,
BA

Thanks! And thanks for checking out my blog. Good luck to you as well. (Since I initially wrote this post in November, I have recently also discovered Pinterest! By using Pinterest, you can “pin” pictures from your blog and that can also drive a lot of traffic!) What other things have you tried?

Oh that’s right, it takes a lot to get good photos through. And somehow, it takes a lot of time to learn the tricks… Phew!!! But one must keep trying. Once your pics get through, there’s a spike in the traffic for sure
